Sophos UTM - No internet after restart

Hello,

First time poster so forgive any mistakes but I am having trouble whenever I restart my UTM.  If I do a restart, my devices on the network cannot access the internet.  It will show me "State = Down, Link = Up".  There is nothing wrong with my cable modem.  I usually solve this by restarting and restarting the UTM over the course of a day or so, and one of those times it comes back up.  Is there any way I can check what is going on?  Anyone have any ideas?

I should state that this is a new issue.  I had my UTM and cable modem in a different part of the house and never had an issue after a restart.  But did some re-arranging and moved the location. This only started once I moved both the cable modem and the UTM.  (I can't see why that would cause an issue)

I am using:

  • Sophos UTM 9.703.3 - on an old min-pc (Zotac)
  • One internal NIC (eth0) - connects to switch
  • External NIC (eth1) - via USB port connects to cable modem (TPLINK)

Thanks!

  • Hello Aren,

I have the same problem, as many others too. Therefore I posted an idea, and linked even to a possible solution which should be easy to implement for Sophos - as to my understanding. However, maybe I am also wrong, I don't claim I know more then them. But the solution posted seems to do the trick for all other users having the same firewall-modem problem.

As to setting the interface-speed to a fixed speed, not auto-negotiate: It reliably worked for me when setting it to 100MBit, but did not work at all when setting the same NIC to 1GBit.

Edit: As nd said, putting a switch between modem and  Sophos UTM solves the issue as well. If you have a managed switch, I can tell you how I configured mine to avoid having an additional switch only for keeping the UTM up and running.

    Kind regards,

    Markus
