Recommended steps for converting sg125w to home device.

Hi All, as a result of hw refresh I have sg125w rev.2 hardware appliance available for home lab.

The original sg125w license was converted to sg135w so there is no valid license associated with sg125w.

I would like to use UTM Home Use license for this unit, but I'm not sure, If it's enough to SSH to sg125w, rename /etc/asg, reboot device and then apply Home license?

Or it's necessary to re-image sg125w with software appliance image?

Many thanks in advance.

Kind regards,

vaanja

  • Hi

It might require a complete Harddisk cleanup. With the existing partition, you will not be able to use Sophos Home license as it will mostly give an error when uploading a license file.

  • Hi Jaydeep, thank you for your answer.

It looks like you are right - if hw appliance has license expired or it's just after factory reset, there is no way to enter WebAdmin (license required) nor use SSH (disabled by default).

I tried to boot from usb stick with software appliance loaded, but no luck - just after BIOS splashscreen disappered I lost video and nothing has happened.

The result of this activity is bricked device, I'm not able to connect to web interface, cannot ping it etc.

Is there any guide for de-bricking sg125w?

  • After spending hours by trying to find out what is wrong with my sg125w I've installed software appliance on it using console cable (fortunately I have working rs232 to usb cable available) and Putty. I was not able to install it from USB as it ended with "install.tar is not available..." error and I was not able to switch to console (ALT F2 was not working from Putty nor USB keyboard) so I burned DVD with asg-9.605-1.1.iso and voila!!!

I learned a lot during this exercise. What I don't like is really old fashion style of installation, it's hard to find out CD/DVD equipment at home these days and also monitors with VGA are rare...
