Still having one weird problem when playing online game with my Sophos UTM at home.

Hi guys,

I will try to make it quick.  Also my question is not so important because its a home UTM, mainly for fun since I also have a Cisco router, and only a few things doesn't work at the moment, but maybe someone encountered this problem.  So, I had a few Sophos ASG running smoothly since a year, never updated running 9.601 and updated pattern weekly.  Also had IDS and web filtering running, country blocking and a few other features, all working pretty well.  Lately I choose to update my home utm from 9.601 to 9.605-1.  Here the problem begin.  All the process of updating go smoothly but after the update, packet lost, disconnect.  So I suspected that I may have a problem with updating from 9.601 to 9.605-1.  So I completely reinstalled the Sophos UTM to version 9.605 (since is didn't keep my original ASG iso).  I only changed the default MTU to 1500 in shell since a bug (or its intend this way) prevent to keep the changed MTU setting for my cable internet connection (by default, the UTM put a 576 MTU on my internet connection).  I reinstalled without restoring any backup and I haven't activate any new feature, just the standard firewall, web browsing and with one simple added rule, my computer, any, any, so I don't have a problem for my test.

All worked nicely, but one things is not working !!! Playing World of Tank !!! I play and after a few second, randomly, my ping go to 600-700 ms and the game freeze for a few moment and resume, so you can imagine its not great for playing an online Game like World of Tank.  So I suspected a lot of thing (I work in computer storage, so I have good basic in networking, so I have tried a great number of things, but i didn't find my problem) ... anyway mainly, here what I tried :

- I suspected, my ISP, but when I switch to a standard, cheap Asus router, the problem doesn't show up !  All is working perfectly fine for extended period !

- I suspected my hardware, so I try swapping my Intel Network Card (a quad port E1000 IBM intel card), and reinstall with version 9.601 (kindly sent to me by a forum member), did the same with version 9.605-1.  Also try the same process with the integrated Intel card(Intel I217 LM) and another Intel 82574L Card !  Same issue !

- So I suspected that the UTM had change, so I tried the Sophos XG firewall, last available version, same problem !  So again, I suspected my hardware, but again, when I install something else it's working...

- I changed the MTU based on what MTUroute give me with a standard Asus or Cisco Router, same issue !

So I begin to be short of idea !  Next, I will try to install UTM V 9.5xx to 9.6xx.

Have you encountered this weird problem with your UTM and World of tank (or any other online game) ?

Thank :) !

Rather than doing it at the command line, change the MTU in the 'Advanced' section of the Interface definition.

You will want to check the Intrusion Prevention log - I suspect ICMP Flood Protection is causing you an issue.

There are known problems with the other NICs, but the Intel I217 should have no problem.  Does ifconfig show any errors for those NICs?  If you're still having problems, you might want to work through #7 in Rulz (last updated 2019-04-17).
