Astaro.org

Hi Everyone,

we've been planning a migration to a newer and more capable forum site for some time now, and were just a few weeks away from kicking off this process. Unfortunately, a recent vulnerability has appeared in the wild, affecting vBulletin, the software we were using for the astaro.org communities site. Astaro.org was not compromised from this vulnerability, but as a precaution, we did take the site down, to protect our users.

The site used a number of add-ons, and some custom plugins, which would need weeks of effort to convert and replace, if we were to upgrade the site and apply fixes for this vulnerability. As we were planning to migrate by that time anyway, we've made the decision to cut immediately to the new communities site, which has been running successfully for other Sophos products. To that end, we've spun up two forums quickly, where astaro.org users can again congregate. unfortunately, it will still take some time to complete the migration, so user accounts, and previously posted content has not yet been migrated. This process will take a matter of weeks to complete. In the interim, we will create a static view of the astaro.org, so content there will still be accessible. This should be completed later today.

This certainly wasn't the introduction we wanted for our new communities site, but we are excited about the new platform, and its capabilities. Please be patient as we step through this transition as quickly as we can. There will be some pain, but we will try our best to minimize it for you.

Thanks everyone for your patience, and understanding!

  • thanks for the info. i hope astaro.org returns as it has been an invalueable resource for information and discussion that people would greatly miss. Please reconsider getting it up and running again. thank you for your consideration.

  • Thanks Benjamin. We were (and still are) planning to migrate the content and forums here. So it will return on this forum platform, as we migrate content, and users here!
  • Alan, my reading of the vulnerability indicates that we would have had no problem if the User BB were behind a UTM running Webserver Protection where the Firewall Profile included Form Hardening. Was the User BB not being protected in that manner?

  • I really hate to be negative in every comment I make since I really like sophos as a company and the products it makes. However certain knee jerk reactions just boggle my mind.
I had been using astaro.org for years. Vulnerabilities in vbulletin are nothing new but I don't remember the site being unavailable EVER. I realize that sophos wants to integrate everything in this community site but the layout makes quick naviagation not only cumbersome but impossible.
I have complained about that previously on the general forum discussion and was shown the search button and all the other fancy widgets. I am grateful for the responses and the pride in the new community website but this site is definitely not catered towards users who want to browse the current activities quickly while they are enjoying their morning coffee.

In any case, my comments here are pointless since you guys have already made up your mind to vaporize the astaro.org website. I will miss it greatly.

  • The circumstances are not optimal, but we'll make the best of things.  Let the good times roll.

  • this "resource" is not fit for a replacement of astaro.org, terrible layout and usability - maybe us users should consider running our own Forum or sophos should stop trying to force things on us that we dont like (shutdown of forum, copernicus public pre-alpha)

  • Simply changing the image profile was difficult to find. Anyway it seems that Sophos is going in another direction than Astaro. I follow Sophos Products since 2008 and then Astaro and they are great product but this integration is going to take time I think.
This new community seems Copernicus. Strange and not easy navigation as Astaro.org is.
Will be Sophos able to impress us with new functionality even on community part?

Sophos is lacking on information. Many changes and poor information at moment. In another AlanT's post they are changing other internal aspects so that's why no RN on Beta3.

We are people, not robot. Give us more information and spend time on community to listen advices from people that fight with problems and new needs everyday.

Astaro.org rocks. Hope you will think about!

  • I appreciate the info. I already miss the community :/
Curiously, will the newer more capable forum have a handy iOS App as we have today?
  • What a poor excuse for shutitng down the astaro.org forum...;)
Alan, you should be honest...telling that this was directive from upstream management.
  • I do have to agree that the layout of this site is cumbersome and frankly horrible to look at. Someone should really consider changing up the layout, or at least provide layout options for your users so they can change it if they wish.

I understand the vBulletin issue, and that board has been the target of vulnerabilities in the past as far as I can remember. But, I do agree with Bob about it being behind a UTM, and if it was not, why would it not be set up like that?
