Can I get 1000 Mbps on my UTM110?

Okay, to start this off, while I only have a general knowledge of computer stuff and a vague knowledge of networking stuff. Sorry if I'm a little slow to understand things.

I have a UTM 110/120 (rev 5). We basically only use WiFi at the house, but I just ran Ethernet to my PC, so I am currently the only one using Ethernet. That's also why I didn't really notice before. We have 1000 Mbps internet, but as soon as it goes into the Sophos, it drops to around 100Mbps. I've been trying to read up, and from what I understand, the device might not be able to do all the functions its set up to do and still give out anywhere near the 1000 Mbps.

So basically, just wondering if it's the machine itself that needs an upgrade, or if something else went wrong somewhere.

  • Hi Tye and welcome to the UTM Community!

Yes, you will need a more-powerful device if you want to get the most out of UTM and gigabit fiber at home.  For personal, not business, use at home, the full UTM subscription is free.  The 110/120 is the older entry-level device for UTM business customers.  With a home connection under 100Mbps, it's not an unreasonable device to run UTM, but it's not for you.

You will probably want to use the Web Filtering capability to help you stay safe from malware.  When your kids are teens, you'll want to use it to keep them off undesirable sites.  If there are just two of you, you'll want a device with a fast dual core CPU.  If there are four or more, a fast quad core.  See the more-recent posts in the Unofficial HCL thread at the top of the Installation forum.

    Cheers - Bob
