Data usage for 4G Network?

I have a 4G Connection as an active backup to a Cable Connection.

I'd like to find out how much data it is using per day/week/month.

However Sophos Support says this is not possible?

See below:

ME: Hi Support, how can I find out how much data is going through Cable vs 4G interfaces?

I’d like to make sure I’m keeping below my data allowance for 4G.

SUPPORT: You can check the Network Usage under Logging & Reporting > Network Usage > Daily.

You can use the QoS to limit the bandwidth.

ME: Thanks Support,

That page doesn’t show the total usage, ie 560 MB for the day.

It only shows the rate or speeds of usage, ie Max, Min etc.

Data plans are typically in GB, ie 40 GB a month.

The rate of data usage is a completely separate thing.

I need to know how MUCH data is used in a time period, not variable data rates.

SUPPORT: Unfortunately that is the only information available on the UTM.

 Any ideas?

Thanks, Martin

  • You're trying to make it too difficult, Martin.  When the tab first opens, it shows "Top clients" "Today."  Just follow my instructions above.

  • Thanks Bob,

I think the problem was terminology, ie an "object", which I now know is an address, ie the 4G address.

Thanks for all your help, I wish you were in charge of Sophos Support, they said this wasn't possible.

    Cheers, Martin

  • Yeah, like most techie things, each has its own terms of art.  WebAdmin is a GUI that manipulates databases of objects and settings.  A single change there can cause the Configuration Daemon to rewrite hundreds of lines of the code used to run the UTM.

  • Cheers Bob,

I've been checking the stats and this doesn't seem to work.

For example, I've downloaded about 1GB to my computer today.

But the External WAN address is only showing 76MB.

Likewise I've been testing my 4G failover by using Speedtest at least 5 times today, which takes multiple MB per test.

Yet the 4G Address only shows 0.5MB?

  • The "(Address)" object is the client or server when the traffic is through a Proxy (Web Filtering, SMTP, WAF, ...), but most traffic is from browsing.

Do the Bytes in/out on the Executive Report give you a better picture of what you want?

    Hi Bob,

No it doesn't unfortunately, which is very strange, why would it only report what one of the internet connections is using?

This is what the report shows under Network Usage:

    Top 10 Clients

    Top10 Servers

    Top10 Services

    Top10 Applications

    Top10 Application Categories

    Graph of Concurrent connections

Traffic - Home Network, this is Cable Only Network

Traffic - Work Network, This is Cable PLUS 4G Network

    Traffic - External (WAN) (eth1)

No traffic for ETH0 which is where I've plugged in a Dovado Router in bridged mode, which has the 4G modem.

I've given up on the 4g modem being plugged in via usb, too unreliable, if the service drops the 4G service doesn't come back up unless the Sophos is rebooted.

With the 4G modem plugged in direct, its traffic figures are reported.

    Cheers, Martin

  • I've just checked the Daily Executive Report (Generate Report Now) and the 4G usage IS now occurring.

It seems it wasn't picked up in the weekly report as it was only installed last week, perhaps the Weekly reports don't pick up connections that are added during the week?

Anyway, all good now, for the moment ;)
