LDAP Authentication fails w/ period char in User Name

Hi All
(Not sure if this has been covered)
If a user's name has a period in it (ie. deter.dorey), which has special characters ie. !)% in its password than it Fails LDAP Authentication. Yet a User without a period in it's User Name Passes Both tests (Both LDAP and AD).

So

1. A user name with a period in it (deter.dorey), which has special characters ie. !)% in its password FAILED LDAP Authentication.
2. A user name with a period in it (deter.dorey), which has special characters ie. !)% in its password passed AD Authentication.

Why is this so.
