iPhone 7 and Wi-Fi Roaming

I recently purchased an iPhone 7, and am having a really hard time getting it to roam between two APs.  Basically, the phone will stay connected to the old AP for several minutes after it's gone out of range, causing apps to loose connection.

I have an AP100 and AP50.  Both are broadcasting the same SSID on different 5GHz channels.  Reading the relevant doc: support.apple.com/.../HT203068 I've validated that the signal strength drops below 70 dBm, and that the other AP is providing a much stronger signal.  I'm wondering, do the Sophos APs support 802.11k and 802.11r?  It seems like iPhones need both of those in order to quickly swap between APs.

Any other ideas?  Thanks in advance!

  • Hi,

802.11r is supported in SG and XG but on WPA2 only - you have to activate it explicitly in the advanced settings. It also requires that the APs are in the same broadcast domain (so: connected to the same interface on the SG/XG). There might also be an issue is because of mixing AP100 with AP50. AP100 run 802.11ac while AP50 only run 802.11n . I'm not sure how the client deals with this difference.

    Kind regards,
