Issues Setting up APX320 Access Points

Hello,

I am new to the world of Sophos and especially the access point aspect. I was under the impression that these were more or less plug and play and that has not been my experience. I think my setup is atypical and that is causing the issues. My DHCP is not my Sophos firewall it is a server that is on our network and my default gateway is the switch stack commander (stack of HP Procurve switches). I am seeing that these reach out to the default gateway with the IP address of 1.2.3.4 which again is the stack. I also saw that I can add a predefined option to the DHCP server with 234 and the IP address of the Sophos Firewall. I tried this and didn't have any luck either. What can I do get these points to talk to the firewall. Sorry if this isn't all the information needed but again, I am new to all of this.

I appreciate the help in advance!

  • By default a Sophos AP reaches out to 1.2.3.4 to try to register with a Sophos firewall upstream of it, for the Sophos firewall to control it. I seem to remember a warning about intermediate switches causing issues and that you should first attach the AP directly to the firewall and once it's registered you can move it behind switches. (Or that might only be for Sophos Central control of APs, I can't remember.)

Do you want to control the AP from a Sophos Firewall, or (better option) Sophos Central Wireless?

  • From Sophos FireWall itself we are not configured for Sophos Central Wireless. How would I connect directly to the firewall and have DHCP also Is the Firewall POE enabled or would I need a POE switch unmanaged to plug it in? Without the Stack commander plugged in how will the AP gets its IP?
