Hello,
Is it possible to upgrade XG 105 to V 18?

Greetings.

  • Hello Luk,

It's not the hardware that the retirement is a concern for, it is the Software. SFOS v16 is still supported till August 2020 and v17 has no declared EOL because it is still in the process of EAL 4+ certification. The appropriate section is here: https://community.sophos.com/kb/en-us/121502#XG%20Firewall%20Software

So no, the appliance does not have to change unless they want to use v18. They are still supported and will continue to do so on the final "Long Term Stable Branch" of v17. Seeing as 105s are normally edge devices for site connectivity and basic filtering if they are utilising local breakout, the new features of v18 will likely not be a consideration for them.

Sophos is not stating that the 105 or 85 are old and need to be upgraded, they are stating the next generation of Software has minimum hardware requirements and unfortunately the 105 does not meet those.

As with all hardware upgrades (UTM >SG for example), Sophos does generally do a buyback/migration path.

This is the point. People pay for license and they expect to change the applicance every 3-5 years and not after one year.

Contacting Sophos for having a discount for a new model is, of course, the way to go otherwise I would not immage the consequences from the partner side (looking for a new product).

Upgrading memory should not be a problem (on UTM was possible and even supported by Astaro) and supported by Sophos (at least). Sophos should consider to allow v18 on XG105 if memory is brought to 4 GB without SW checking.

The link of retirement calendar is the same one I shared!

    Thanks

  • Hi Luk,

It was the same link, I wanted to highlight the supported software versions as hardware support and software support never really go hand in hand.
