Rebooting a RED to fix State Up, Link Down Problem

I'm maintaining a network with an SG135 at the home office and a RED 15 at a remote location. Every month or so (last time was last night) the RED will go to State Up, Link Down. Generally power cycling the RED will reconnect it as it did this morning. I'd like to be able to remotely reboot the RED without having to wait for someone to physically unplug it. Can this be done via SSH or some other way? I did have access to a computer on the network where the RED is so if SSH'ing into it is an option, I can do that.

Thanks

  • Disabling the RED within WebAdmin will initiate a RED-reboot-loop until connection is possible again.

... But never seen this state before ...

  • I thought I read that disabling from the webadmin only disconnects, not reboots. This is good to know.

And yes, this is the state the device keeps falling into. I wonder if it's their internet connection having problems. I don't have a lot of confidence in the ISP.

    Thanks,

  • This happened again.

I tried Disabling the RED in RED Management > [Server] Client Management then setting the status to Disabled. I waiting a couple of minutes and enabled it again. After 5 minutes there's been no change. I'm about to get someone there to power-cycle the RED. This usually fixes it. Does this sound like the RED could be failing? The Live Log only shows Ping/Pongs of the RED that's working.

  • If it's any help, here's what the lights on the RED are doing during this:

  • And after manually rebooting the RED, both State and Link are back up.

  • do you have a device behind the red.

I think interfaces without packets shows as link down.

  • Yes, tens of computers. But so far, manually power-cycling the RED reconnects.

  • Hi Jeff - it looks like this is the first we've seen you here - welcome to the UTM Community!

Yes, I would get Sophos Support involved as this unit may be failing in an unusual fashion.

Please let us know if the following done as root at the command line successfully restarts a good connection:

    killall red_server && red_server

  • Thanks, glad to be here.

I've never used any configuration other than the web interface so I have 2 questions.

    1. Is this command line issued over SSH connect to the UTM or the RED?

    2. Your command line shows red_server. Is that a placeholder for my RED device name or do I literally type red_server?

  • Good questions, Jeff.

    1. At the command line of the UTM.

    2. Just copy and paste the command as written.  This restarts the RED services without powering the UTM off/on.

    Cheers - Bob
