Remote Management Console not connecting

Hi

i am trying to setup a helpdesk user access into the Sophos Console for the first time and am having a little bother.

The application is installed correctly as matches the installation on my computer exactly and i have no issues.

the error they get when opening is:

Access is denied.

----- [outer exception] -----

   -- error: 0x80070005

   -- facility: Win32

   at class ATL::CComPtr<struct ISMT_CoreServices2> __cdecl bl::CreateCoreServices(const class std::basic_string<wchar_t,struct std::char_traits<wchar_t>,class std::allocator<wchar_t> > &)

   at int __cdecl Run(int,class bl::CommandLine,enum bl::ConsoleType::Type)

   at int __stdcall wWinMain(struct HINSTANCE__ *,struct HINSTANCE__ *,wchar_t *,int)

firewall isn't blocking the connection as same happens even after disabling the firewall on the server.  i have checked the dcom permissions and given the helpdesk group access.

I've confirmed i have given the user access to both the helpdesk role and the sub-estate.

I am not sure what else i am missing that would cause them a problem - and the error above isn't particularly helpful.  Can anyone help at all?

Many thanks

  • Hello Twazok,

    is this a domain environment or workgroup and are the involved accounts local or domain?

    Does the error pop up almost immediately? I get an early (i.e. there is no attempt to connect to the management server) Access denied when I try to run the remote console as a different user (don't ask me why I do this :smileyvery-happy:). I'm asking because there's more than DCOM, Console/DB Administrator and role/estate depending on the environment.

  • Hi

    This is a Domain environment, and the account connecting is a domain account.  It is this account i have granted access to the relevant sophos role and to dcom.  I wouldn't say it is an immediate error - there is a slight delay as if it is trying to connect.

    Ive checked the server and cannot see any errors being logged in the event viewer at all. Not sure what else to check as the error doesn't tell me much.

  • Hello Steve,

    so it's a simple setup. :smileyfrustrated: expletive deleted

    as if it is trying to connect

    a connection attempt made (whether successful or not) should be captured by Wireshark. Played a little bit but couldn't provoke an Access is denied blocking the connection or fiddling with the security settings on the server. SOP when you don't have the slightest idea what the problem could be: Does it work with a helpdesk account from your computer, does it work with your account from the new remote console (and I guess you have more rights than a helpdesk user)?

    If this doesn't give a hint you'd have to contact Support(*), I've no idea what the Console is about to do at this point.

    (*) If you do want to dig a little bit before contacting Support there's one thing you could try. PM me if you are interested.
