Enterprise Console | Scheduled reports narrow

The Enterprise consoles scheduled reports get generated in a distorted format.  The width is very narrow and description has to take up many lines because of it.  It also appears to be missing all the statistic numbers for  rows where the manually generated report would show them.  I have tried pdf and html formats but the issue seems to be occurring before it sets the final format.  There are no report width settings in the properties.

  • Hi,

Does it help to change the report layout?

    https://www.sophos.com/en-us/medialibrary/PDFs/documentation/sec_521_heng.pdf?la=en   page 214.

10.17 Change the report layout You can change the page layout used for reports. For example, you can display a report in landscape (wide-page) format. 1. Click the page layout icon in the toolbar at the top of the report. 2. In the Page Setup dialog box, specify page size, orientation and margins. Click OK. The report is then displayed with these page settings. These page settings are also used when you print or export the report.

Otherwise, it might be due to the printer installed and the settings of that.

    Regards,

    Jak

  • Hello MikeDiGrazia,

the scheduled reports are AFAIK created by the management service under the SYSTEM account using its default printer. Likely this is the XPS Writer.
As far as I can see the setting that takes effect is accessible via Printer properties -> button Change Properties -> then tab Advanced -> button Printing Defaults ... -> button Advanced ... and there the Paper Size.

    Christian

  • The report layout can be changed after the report is manually generated.  The settings are normal letter and seem to only affect  the currently generated report.  They do not save for the next report.

The server running the enterprise console has many printers installed.  I checked the settings on the XPS writer per another suggestion but that was set to letter as well.  How do I tell which printer the Enterprise Console is using?

  • The xps printer has letter as it's paper size but there are several label printers that do not.  How do I check / change the system account's default printer?

  • Hello MikeDiGrazia,

the XPS printer has indeed the correct size for Advanced/Printing Defaults (please note they're independent from Printing Preferences)? Maybe the WMI Tasks: Printers and Printing MSDN article is of some help?
A "manual" report is formatted "on the fly" and the user's default printer's Printing Preferences apply for the initial display.

    Christian

  • Christian,

Thank you.  This appears to be the correct direction.  Currently the system account has no default printer.  When I try to change it with this command it makes no change.  The command does work to change the printer on other accounts.   I have confirmed the Visualbasic and Powershell methods work, but not for the system account on this server.  I am using psexec to get a command prompt as system.  Server is Windows 2008 R2.  Are there any other methods you can suggest?

Edit: There are no errors returned by the command, it just does not set a printer to default for the system account.

  • Hello MikeDiGrazia,

it just does not set a printer to default
yeah, looks like. Can't say how to determine which one is actually used. Anyway the one it uses has apparently some odd paper size so what is the output of the following command?
    WMIC PRINTERCONFIG GET Name,PaperLength,PaperSize,PaperWidth
Perhaps you can identify the printer this way and then set the Printing Defaults with the GUI as mentioned in a previous post?

    Christian

  • Here is the output.  It's pretty clear the Zebra printers are the problem.  I can't just change their paper size to 8 1/2 x 11 though.  They're label printers and take a proprietary paper size.  If it's just using the last installed printer maybe I can find one of the standard ones to remove and reinstall.

  • Christian,

First of all, thank you for all of your help.  I have resolved this issue.  You were correct in that the Sophos Reports were using the default printer on the system account.  I was eventually able to set this using the .Default profile in the registry.  I copied the two keys from my registry profile [HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows] to the system profile [HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows].  The keys were:

    Name                                    Type                        Data
Device                                   REG SZ                 Microsoft XPS Document Writer,winspool,Ne14:
    UserSelectedDefault         REG_DWORD     0x00000001 (1)

This allowed the scheduled report to be generated with the correct width, showing the actual data.

  • Hello MikeDiGrazia,

don't mention it, I did nothing more than getting you on the right track. Obviously you have done some research to come up with the solution. Want to add that after setting these values WMIC shows the printer with Default=TRUE. Did you find out why one of the Zebras is selected otherwise (wonder what happens if you remove these keys)?

BTW - didn't know that the Gestetner brand still exists. Worked with some Gestetners, the Cyclograph and then the offset printing machines sure beat the spirit duplicators (used one of these as well). Didn't need a driver but you had to turn the crank .[:D]
