Microsoft office applications started being blocked on macOS machines

From today macOS users started claiming microsoft office applications were blocked by Sophos EP.

As fas as I know, according to this notice (+) Notification of Application Control application updates Planned for the 28th November 2023 - Application Control - Sophos Labs - Sophos Community, the office applications are out of scope being added to the control list.

And on Sophos Central, I can't find these applications on application control list and blocked events log.

Is anyone experiencing the same issue?

  • Not confirmed yet if this works as a temporary workaround, but after removing the tick on new applications added to this category on office suites, got a reply from one of the users that he hasn't seen the notification.

  • I was just about to post that this should only be affecting customers who have the "New applications added to this category by Sophos" option. Whilst this is obviously disruptive, if it is linked to that setting the product is behaving as it should.

  • That would be true if the product was actually showing up in the category having been added by Sophos, thus allowing us to manually toggle it off, but it did not appear there. The issue isn't "Sophos has blocked new apps like it always does" it's "Sophos is blocking Office Updater/ Apps without showing that it's doing so or allowing us to exempt them as usual."

  • Good point, well made, they should have course have been listed to allow you to toggle them off. Detections should be off within a few hours, the above workaround should work in the mean time.
