WORRISOME: Sophos Anti-Virus Stops Working

Hi here,

Today my Sophos shut off without warning, and it has done this other times, too.

First off: why?

What can I do?

How can I know if Sophos is working properly?

Thank you so much for your help! I am an artist and consider Banksy's arrest symbolic: are artists safe anywhere??

    Hello,

You'll need to be more specific with "shut off without warning" in order to provide any sort of useful information.

There are a few things you can check to know whether the software is working as intended. First, check the Sophos Shield menu bar icon, it will tell you things like "Up to Date" or "On-Access Scanner is Disabled". Next check what processes are running using Activity Monitor (show All Processes, filter by Sophos) - there should be a number of them running. Also might want to check the logs using Console (check /Library/Logs/Sophos Anti-Virus.log as well as /var/log/install.log).

  • Immediately after updating my iMac to Yosemite I got, and still get, a message"Sophos Anti Virus is not running.

It's up-to-date and About Sophos reads:  Sophos AntiVirus 8.0.25C.

Under Preferences:  The on-access scanner is off.  "Restore Defaults"  is no help.

It appears that it's not able to run under Yosemite.

  • This also happened to me.

Same message. Same Version: : 8.0.25C.

    iMac mid2011 if its relevant.

I imagine it is an incompatibility in Yosemite.

But OS trumps AV. I can uninstall the AV. I cannot uninstall the OS.

I did notice that although the "Update Now" menu option claims I am up to date, the download in the free tools section claims to be version 9.x. I am in the process of downloading. Hopefully that will get AV back up and running.

  • Tried the download version. It appears to have fixed the problem.

where ithe menu bar item said "The on-access scanner is off", it now says "Up to date"

And the icon is no longer greyed out.

    Version is now 9.2.2

Note to staff: Adjusting the behaviour of the "Update Now" option to get version 9.x rather than claiming that 8.x is up to date may resolve other issues of this nature. Even if it just takes the user to the download page.

We retired version 8 back in April of this year, and pushed an update to all endpoints to upgrade automatically. Did you get an old installer from some where? You might want to re-download the installer from our website (visit www.sophos.com and look for the Free Tools link near the bottom of the page).

Installing the Home Edition over the top of an existing version of Home Edition will work fine.  If you previously installed a version that isn't the Home Edition then see this thread...

If you're still having problems see the thread below as there there are instructions for uninstalling - see the post that links off to the article with the removal tools...

  • Hi-I've recently registered with the forum. On screen scanning is disabled has been greyed out since I updated to Yosemite. I downloaded the latest Home Edition from the website and I get an error message "An incompatible product is installed". I need help to resolve this and get Sophos running again.

  • I have started getting this problem, also.

    Using Mavericks with Sophos 9.2.2  3.55.0   5.07

I can update and scan but the icon remains grayed out.

I see no way to start Sophos when I bring up the app from the app folder or the dock. Why not?

Does Sophos need to be in the list of login items? I don't ever recall seeing it there.

    Thanks,

    Bart

  • I have been getting the Sophos Is not Running message when I turn on my computer in the morning, but when I check my preferences it says the on access scanner is working.

I am using Mavericks 10.9.5 on a 2008 MacBook Pro, Sophos version 9.2.2

    Thanks
