tons of help

Hi I am completely  new  here  and I need a lot of  help. My user abilities are basically non existent . please  help me .

I am a Linux mint  user  but totally inadequate to do anything other than surf the web ; I don't type so I don't know all the intricacies of the keyboard .

I also use win 10.  I just installed win 10 on a  1tb drive . after setup last nite  i returned this  morning  and was about to activate  my installation  ; I brought  up edge  browser and typed  in google  and  immediately a full screen tab  came  up and a loud voice was telling me  that my computer had a virus  and  if  I didn't call them ,   " Microsoft " ,  my computer would be  disabled  . I didn't realize  I could minimize the page and gain my real browser back. I was sure  it was a scam but  didn't  know  how to get away  so I  hit my power reset  button   on my tower.  Now when I try to boot into win 10  my screen says  something  like  " missing  operating  system " .

I am capable  of repartitioning and reinstalling etc. but am very concerned about  my HDD, bios ,and  MBR  and don't know the first thing about  scanning and securing  it, them, for the future .

I spoke with Sophos  live chat and was directed to some appropriate  tools and to this Forum  and  I really hope someone can  help me  figure what the best tools are for my situation and get some  help  implementing  them .                    whatever info might be needed  about my system and several HDD's  please just let me  know  .

 thank you very much    jcc

  • Hi

Did you have any Sophos products installed on your PC prior to receiving the "Microsoft" alert on your browser?

In terms of securing your PC in the future, we have a lot of options available to you. I would recommend you start by looking into our Anti-Virus which is available in both paid and free (Sophos Home) versions, either Centrally managed (Sophos Central), on-prem (Sophos Enterprise Console) or standalone.

For further information and to download free trials, please visit our site: Sophos.com

    Cheers,

    Karlos
