How to scan a directory with Virus Removal Tool?

Hello,

Is it possible to scan a directory (single or several) with Virus Removal Tool (SVRT)?

By default it scans all local drives. But I need to do a quick check in some directories (c:\windows, etc.)

Any suggestions...

Thanks in advance,

  • Hello Viktor Nazarenko,

SVRT is not intended to be used as occasional on-demand scanner. Both when used as actual removal tool in response to a (suspected) infection or simply as second opinion only a full scan is reasonable.
Could you give some details why you need to do a quick check in some directories (and why some other action, product, or solution doesn't fit the bill)?

  • Hello Christian,

    Thanks for reply.

We are looking for a second opinion scanner. Preferably it should run from a command line (Windows) and scan only some directories.

I wanted to check a solution from Sophos and found only SVRT.

But I've faced with inability to scan selected directories. IMHO it's a strange behavior. Other such tools (Kaspersky, DrWeb, etc.) allow this.

Could you suggest another tool from Sophos?

  • Hello Vit,

you're looking for some free tool, aren't you? Could you perhaps give a more detailed description of your need for a "narrow" second opinion?

  • Hello Christian,

It doesn't have to be free.

I just want to test Sophos ability to find viruses and/or malware and to make a decision about this product. We have a special tests and environment. I don't want to install Sophos Home etc.

Virus Removal Tool is very good for such testing. Scan ALL local drives - it's too long.

And in real life/cases we often need a 'Quick Scan' and / or scan selected disk areas.

    Regards,

  • Hello Vit,

I see. We're talking about static (i.e. file on-demand) scanning. Engine and data are the same for all products, normally you have to install the product if you want that it updates its definitions. Dunno about Home and Central but SESC comes with the command line sac32cli.exe (its initialization is "expensive" though). Last but not least there the SAV Dynamic Interface that also requires an installed product. In all cases the product doesn't need to be enabled for on-access scanning of the host though.
