Sophos finds corrupt files

Can someone explain the fact that Sophos's scan finds corrupt files, but Disk Utility doesn't? In configuring a scan can I do one of these things: 1) have Sophos ignore corrupt files, or 2) have Sophos's scan quarantine corrupt files?

  • The thing is they appear corrupt to the Sophos Anti-Virus scanner, but they probably aren't corrupt to the program that uses them.  It's all to do with what Sophos Anti-Virus reads from the initial file information when it encounters the file.  The thread below has a link off to a good explanation that should help...

And there is the 'Issues detected' posting in the Help section of this forum with a short video...

...which says they generally aren't anything to worry about.  However you can post your scan log of the files found and we can investigate further if required - I've never seen a log with a real problem though.

To answer you questions directly: Sophos does technically ignore them, however you get one report of 'Issues detected' in the program and they are listed in the scan log for your information and for reference.  Sophos doesn't quarantine these files and you probably don't want them locked down by SAV.  These could be system files that no non-OS program has any business reading and if SAV took control of them the Mac OS could error or fail to boot (worse case scenario).
