How to temporarily disable or turn off Sophos

Is there a way to temporarily turn off or disable the program?

Also is there a way to allow certain apps to bypass being checked as it seems my computer is sluggish since installing sophos

    Do you know of anything that would make computer slow down after downloading program?

    Yes, I think so:  when the software is first installed it will run through your entire filestore to check that you have no known viruses.  This will naturally take quite a long while.   However, once it has done this - and you are declared clean - it will only need to check new files being down-loaded, which takes next to no time at all.   Of course, if you attach external file stores (external discs for backing up, say) it will also go through those to check them...
