Menu icon vanished, can't access preferences

I'm using Sophos AV on a Macbook Pro running OSX 10.9.4. Earlier today I noticed that the shield icon has disappeared from my menu bar. When I open up Sophos from Applications and click "Show Status in Menu Bar," nothing happens. I tried to open up preferences and got a message saying "Sophos Anti-Virus Preferences Error: Configuration daemon is not running." Not sure what to do about this, other than restart my computer, which I tried without success. Any advice would be appreciated.

  • Realized this morning that I have a different version of Sophos AV for Mac, as I downloaded the software through my university. My mistake. At any rate, a clean reinstall seems to have fixed the issue, so fingers crossed.

  • I have the same issue. It happened after I cleaned out cache, launch agent, and launch daemon folders on my iMac to speed up performance (had gotten very slow, with hanging apps, etc). About panel for Sophos shows Product Name UNKNOWN and version UNKNOWN. Guess I'll have to reinstall.
