Sophos Preferences - Messaging.

I don't understand what the 'Messaging' option is for.  I can fill in the information panels required - i.e. Report; Recipient (my email address?) and my Outgoing Email Server but what would I put in the Sender panel?

Would someone please advise me what this is all about.

  • When you receive an email in your inbox it comes 'from' some address.  You can use that field to specific whatever address you want the email alert to say it's from (based on what's allowed by your email server).

For example, as a test: put in your own email address into both fields (so the 'to' and 'from' fields match).

If you want to receive the alert from another address (maybe helpful when creating inbox filtering rules IF you get a lot of them - doubtful for home use) you can change it.  The field is probably of more use to IT admins of a large number of computers where they have set up different email addresses for different sets of computer (like an email address called 'frontofficemacs@mydomain.com' as opposed to 'salesmacteaminbranchoffice@mydomain.com) - basically the email's 'from' field reveals something about what or where the computer is so a security team see it immediately and know it's next to them or 100 miles away.

    I hope that helps.
