SCCM - Migrate from XP to WIN7 with Sophos Encryption

I have just been told that we have to upgrade about 100 laptops from XP to windows7 but they have sophos encryption on it. Has anyone managed to do this with SCCM?

  • Hello UserInterface,

Quoting from chapter 14.5 in the SGE 6.0 Installation Guide (but the same is true for any other version)

Once SafeGuard Enterprise is installed, it is only possible to update the Service Pack version of the operating system series installed. You can, for example install a Windows XP Service Pack update.
However, you cannot migrate from one operation system series to a different one when SafeGuard Enterprise is installed. For example, you cannot migrate from Windows XP to Windows 7 when SafeGuard Enterprise is installed.

So regardless of the migration method you have to uninstall SGE (which implicitly decrypts) and reinstall after migration. In principle this can be done with SCCM (please see Uninstall Safeguard Easy 4.3 without any prompts) but the details depend on the Safeguard version you are using.

  • We have successfully done this in our organization to about 140 Laptops. Using SCCM with an AutoIT script executable package I made. if you or someone has some knowledge of AutoIT its very do-able.

We just also purchased VM's product Horizon Mirage which we were able to deploy Windows 7 without the need to decrypt any systems! Mirage made our windows 7 deployment very easy, I highly recommned its use.

  • Can you provide the steps or script you used to remove Sophos through SCCM 2012?
