Sophos Web Appliance and tagging

Heya,

Im new to this device so if I could get a quick helping hand that would be great.

I have an issue whereby I want to allow a website as well as any links on that site. I am trying to use tags for this but it seems that may not be the right way to go. Is this at all possible? To my mind, if you allow one site then you wouldnt ordinarily allow other non-related domains by way of links from that site. Of course I am probably barking up the wrong tree. Help please?

  • Hi Vanessa, Welcome to sophostalk.

It isn't quite as straight forward as that I'm afraid.  A legitimate website could have links to other unsavoury domains.  Eg. by allowing Google you wouldn't necessarily want to allow every site that Google might link to.

However, many sites are categorized, so in most circumstances you can allow the user access to a category rather than individual websites.  Eg. instead of allowing google.com, bing.com, ask.com, you could allow the user access to 'search engines'.

If you need to be more accurate then unfortunately you would need to add each domain.  On the 'Local site list' you can add multiple sites at once.  You then have a few different options:

    • Tag them as 'Globally Allowed Sites'.  They'll be automatically allowed for all users
    • Create a tag for them.  This tag can then be allowed for a group of users using 'Additional Policies'
    • Change the category of all the sites to a more appropriate category

There are a number of tools that can help you allow individual sites.  For example, the 'Search > By User' tool can show you what sites got blocked for somebody.  Also, the 'User feedback' options allow people to request access when they get blocked.

Does that help?  Let me know if you want help with any of these specific features.

    Thnx, Tom.
