Sophos Web Appliance v3.7.8.1 - bypass

Hi,

I have a java app which just rfuses to run on our network, I suspect the web appliance is blocking it somehow. The app downloads some data each time it's run, it's at this stage that it throws up an error.

I ran an activity search on the desktop PCs ip address but no blocked adreses show.

This java app runs fine if I move the desktop PC over to our broadband connection, i'm pretty confident the web filter is the problem here. This isn't the first time we've had it cause trouble.

Is it possible that the download is being blocked because of the download file type?

Is it possible to view logs for downloads blocked based on filetype?

What is the best way to exclude one PC from the web apppliance filters?

Many thanks

  • Hi babaton,

If you don't see blocked traffic in the Activity Search, I wouldn't expect this to be blocked based on filetype.  The activity search should show any traffic that was actually blocked.

It's possible there is a different kind of conflict.  For example:

    • The app can't authenticate using NTLM.    You can exclude an IP address, user-agent, or URL from authentication in 'Configuration > System > Authentication > Profiles'
    • The download is taking a long time to scan which is breaking the app.  If you know the destination URLs then you can set them to Trusted in 'Configuration > Group Policy > Local Site List'.  Trusting will also stop filetypes being blocked.
    • The app doesn't respect proxy settings, or doesn't know how to talk to proxies properly.  How to workaround this will depend what deployment you are in (Explicit / Transparent / Bridged).

If you wanted us to run some extra diagnostics then Sophos support will be happy to help.

    Best of luck,

    Tom.
