PM for Linux in a VMware virtual machine?

Hello,

Who out there is running Puremessage for Linux, in a VMware virtual machine? This should be Puremessage installed on top of Linux in a VM, not the Sophos provided virtual appliance.

I would like to hear other customers' experiences using virtual machines - the types of things I am interested in, are:

What PM roles (DB, CSM, UI, Milter, Postfix MTA) are run in the VM?

What resources (number of Virtual CPUs, backed by what physical CPUs, amount of RAM, speed of SAN storage) does the VM have?

HOw much volume does the VM process?

What experience can you share, RE: tuning the VM(s), working with Sophos technical support when a VM is involved, Etc?

We are re-organizing our implementation of Puremessage, and would like to virtualize as much as we can. We are changing enough of our PM setup (Solaris Sparc to Linux x86, moving many mailboxes to email forwards via Postfix alias maps), that the performance and load of our current hardware is not very useful in sizing our new environment.

Any conversations I can have with other PM / VMware users, will be very much appreciated.

Thanks for your time,

Ivan.

  • Hi Fetch,

I am using ESXi to house my testing PMX systems. All of our PMX systems relay mail to an internal Exchange server, we don't do local mail boxes. I do not have enought meaningful traffic yet to tell you how it scales. In my production environmnet I have one DB/Milter/MTS server and two Milter/MTA servers and at some point in the future these will be migrated to VMware so I'm also interested in hearing any opinions on doing this

Sophos, do you guys have any recomendations for virtulizing PMX?

    Saint,

Make sure you're using the correct shell when trying to do the install (it looked like it) and double check how you copied the installer to your system. For instance if you cut and pasted it, make sure there are no extra lines etc.
