Can't access webadmin

Hi,

I have Sophos SG 230 appliance. Recently, I am unable to access webadmin through https://192.168.1.1:4444.

Though strangely, few times in a day it is accessible that too either from a different laptop or from my laptop. And moreover, if it is accessible from one laptop but at same time, I cannot access from my laptop. 

Even If I am able to login, Just after few seconds, it stop responding. I have checked all the settings. Further, I cannot telnet at 192.168.1.1 4444 though all the times, I am able to ping it and we are able to use all the services (web protection, application control, wireless protection etc.)

Please help.

    Hi,

    Sorry for missing from forum for long time. Just wanted to update about my problem as this might help other too.

    My network engineer has plugged an additional cable from ADSL modem to switch (apart from adsl to utm) which was causing this problem. I also noticed that problem was occuring when any computer was assigned ADSL interface rather than lease line. So we just unplugged the cable ( ADSL --> Switch) and problem resolved.

    192.168.1.1 is part of the RFC 1918 private network space, 192.168.0.0/16.   

    192.167.1.1 is not part of RFC 1918 private network space and should not be used internally unless it is "your" assigned IP space.  This address currently geolocates to Italy and is, according to RIPE, assigned to Consortium GARR.

    It may be best to restate the entire problem and system providing a complete Layer-2, and up, description.


    Great catch. Actually we are connecting to some other network through IPSec VPN and they are insisting us not to use 192.168.x.x.

    What other options I have. Is it safe to use 10.x.x.x

    The safety, or more generally the consequences, of using a particular IP address space vary based upon your network and the networks you connect to & through and how those connections are made.

    Here's my philosophy...  Reserve subnets in 192.168.0.0/16 for homes and public hotspots.  Anyone one with a UTM should use subnets in 172.16.0.0/12 unless their organization is really large.  10.0.0.0/8 subnets should only be used by ISPs and the largest organizations.
