Feature Request: Use McAfee databases for Webfiltering

FormerMember
FormerMember

Hi all,

as i read today, sophos XG don't uses McAfee website databases anymore, as UTM does.

I would be happy if the McAfee databases could be used in future.

I've just raised a feature request on Sophos Ideas: https://ideas.sophos.com/forums/330219-xg-firewall/suggestions/19878082-use-mcafee-database-for-webfiltering

Please vote for it!

Regards Meghan

  • Could you give us some further informations, why you think this is necessary? Does MCAfee any better in your opinion?

    Please send me Spam gueselkuebel@sg-utm.also-solutions.ch

  • I think you need to setup a UTM and an XG then run the same query.

I use search 'naked women', the UTM blocks, the XG blocks some and reports the others.

The Sophos classification team need a better search tool to assist with their classifying. Maybe they need to setup an XG then compare the results with the UTM and when they are the same declare success until then the XG does not do a very good job of classifying websites.

Yes, in my opinion, McAfee is much better data, as RfCat_VK described above!

I agree with what is writing in few lines here. I guess that in Sophos they are trying to save some money (do not forget that contracts have to be mainteined and they are expensive) and also at the same time Sophos can improve their own web filtering. If they are using Sophos web Filtering on XG there should be a reason.

From customer's side, this is a loss of credibility in Sophos. Now web pages are plenty of malware, ADS, web pages that if calculated by Management, produce loss of productivity if they are not correctly filtered.

For example, if anonymizer proxy, or any additional website that allow users to bypass the Sophos proxy are not blocked, the URL filtering has failed and the customer looks at another vendor.

On UTM I never had a complaint about the quality of Web Filtering. On XG, I am sorry, but a lot of complaints came from customer side.

If they pay the license, it must work!

I am available to give to Sophos some time to improve the overall quality (as I am doing for XG) but they have to improve the overall catching level and give us at least a web-filtering comparable to UTM9.

    Regards

  • I voted for it even though I think Michael Dunn was pretty clear its never going to happen.  I am generally for anything that makes a product better though, so I voted for it.

  • Hi Bill,

while the change might never happen, at the least the users and resellers are pointing out what the issues are that need to be addresses and offering testing solutions.

I agree with you completely, I am just pointing out that Sophos has stated it's not going to happen so don't get expectations or hopes set up for disappointment.  For sure, I would like to see this change too, but Sophos seems to believe their in house solution is great and it's just legacy UTM users who are complaining about a problem that exists largely in their own minds.

  • Hi,

this feature request got declined so far I can see.
