SG 330 Rev. 2 fresh community install - no ports getting enabled

Hello,

I have Sophos SG 330 Rev. 2, completely new. I have used a USB installer to install the community/free edition of SFOS. The installer went ahead correctly, installing OS on the local SSD, and the appliance rebooted. After I saw that the appliance was ready, I noticed that none of the ports was working - I used Port 1 to connect to the local switch and Port 2 to connect to WAN (WAN is DHCP). In any case, I could not access the SFOS Admin interface, none of the clients were getting IP addresses, and even if I set the IP address I was still not getting anywhere - also, none of the lights were on where the cables are connected. The lights light up as the appliance reboots, though.

To point out, before I installed the Community edition of SFOS, the appliance was working properly for a few months (and also yes, even before it was a community edition - 20.0 and now it is the latest available version).

Any idea what this is causing or what to do to start using it?

I am attaching some images for sample and proof. Thank you!

EDIT: attaching images again, apologies :)

  • OK, can you post the name of the installer file you used?

There is no special "home/free" version, this is simply the "software"-installer you use here when installing on any hardware besides Sophos firewall appliances. The Sophos firewall hardware appliances are not meant to be used for the "Home"-Version. So if you intend to use Sophos hardware anyway, do not use the "HW" version, this won't accept a home license.

After installation the port assignement can be anything, but for sure it does not stick with the labels on the front of your SG-system.

So the interface that got 172.16.16.16 in your foto could be any of the ports at the front you show us. Just try them, one after the other, to find the right port. That is: plug a patchcable into each of them, one at a time until you get a reply to a ping 172.16.16.16 -t

  • sorry for mislabeling - yes, it is home, the installer was gotten by registering for the home version, and ISO was also downloaded from the registration form directly. After no lights came up, and my PC did not receive any IP address automatically, I naturally tried all ports available to SG 330 Rev.2 - not a single port provided any result for DHCP lease request

  • dhcp server is not active by default.

but the ip 10.255.0.1 from your screenshot is not a default ip and may be received from internal dhcp or isp-router.

you should configure ip 172.16.16.222 /24 (255.255.255.0) at your pc/notebook and do the check from PhilipRusch. Wait 30sec after connecting the cable.
