Licensing question for FW Home - and what to download for bare metal installation

I spent the last 45 minutes trying to get through to the support portal and actually submit a support question to the official support, but obviously failed due to not being able to register on the support portal since I have no current relationship to Sophos and the Home edition support is limited to Home premium users... well so here i ask then since my Sophos ID seems to have been properly created and validated.

I have a custom FOSS firewall but seeing that Sophos has a free edition available and Sophos has way more resources and knowhow than the guys behind what I currently use, well I may change and install Sophos on my supermicro miniserver machine instead... plenty of CPU and RAM

However, since I use my home network for work, typical SOHO setup, and I am an upright honest and compliance aware person, I just feel I needed to verify the licensing requirement.

  1. I use my home network for work
  2. I do not run my own business

So considering this I am still eligible for the free version of Sophos XG Firewall?

Also I am seriously confused by your download page: https://www.sophos.com/en-us/support/downloads/firewall-installers

Which one is it? No it is not the VMWare or Hyper-V one, it could be the
Hardware Installers: Firewall OS for XG and XGS Series
or the
Software Installers: Firewall OS Software ISO for Intel Hardware
or the
GPL source: RED Firmware GPL source

What do you mean by Common Criteria? Any of those relevant?

Appreciate some assistance sorting out the mess...

  • Hi,

    you download the software version.

Now before you go to far, does your motherboard support  no EUFI bios? What NICs are you using because i219, 225 and 226 are currently not supported.

Next, have you created your licence and received it in email?

Next, home licence support is from these forums.

  • I should be ok, got two to choose from.

    1. Atom C2758, that has survived all the clock issues and works very well, running my current Firewall, on https://www.supermicro.com/products/motherboard/atom/x10/a1sri-2758f.cfm, NIC being Intel C2000 SoC I354 Quad GbE.
    2. Xeon E3-1585, which is an alternative, on https://www.supermicro.com/en/products/motherboard/x11ssv-m4f , mixed Intel NIC see specs.

I have received a Sophos Home Firewall Serial Number and links to create a Central account.

However that do not answer the licensing question.

BTW I stumbled over some older info that Sophos is not very good at keeping kernels up to date, so what kernel is the latest running?

  • The licence will not be an issue, you are not running a business from home just working from home. The Xeon would be a better choice from my experience of home XG.
