Sophos XG unable to install software on machine /etc/versions error

Hi all.

I have been trying to install sophos xg home on my router and I cannot get past the firmware install. The install fails on "installing firmware64298 blocks cat: can't open /etc/versions: no such file or directoy this appliance does not satisfy minimum requirement to upgrade to eSFOS.

I have tried both a different SSD, different boot usb, different NIC, different SW version and using a different imager installer.

OS: SW-20.0.0_GA-222 (also tried SW-19.5.0_GA-197)

CPU: Intel J4125B 2c/4t   (Asrock J412B  integrated motherboard)

RAM: 4G

Storage: 64g / 250gb (tried both)

Nic: Intel 82580 4 port. Also tried a intel x520-da2 2port 10g nic.

I cant find anything elsewhere, I would greatly appreciate any help. I have been able to test sophos xg on a virtual machine and wanted to move that to my main setup.

  • Hi,

here is the issue.- 128Mb AMI UEFI Legal BIOS with GUI support

XG as of v20.0.1 does not support UEFI boot.

Also, I did not  look at the SSD controller.

  • Thanks for confirming.

Its a real shame that there is no UEFI boot in this day and age...

Do you know of any work arounds for this? Or perhaps another recommendation to run it on?

I am looking for an integrated CPU mobo combo mainly due to low power constraints. I have 1g up/down. Was looking at the N100 boards but it seems all new motherboards have no support for legacy / CSM ....

I can go the virtualised route but ive got a dedicated appliance for internet and i would love to keep it that way.

    Thanks

  • Hi

I sympathise with you, I will be in the same boat come Jan 2025 when my XG115W licence expires. I currently run a backup XG on a VM, but it was for testing only not frontline. The box is a way overkill.
