Sophos Firewall home edition questions

Hello all,

1.) I've heard some rumors that sophos firewall home edition will be end of life at some point in that not too distant future, is there any truth to this?

2.) Are there any fanless mini multi NIC pcs that have 2.5gbe that the sophos utm firewall supports? I know it's using a Suse Linux 4.x kernel, I'm just wondering there are any systems people would recommend that work without issue.  (I was thinking of purchasing, a mini pc with 4x Intel i225V 2.5G but it sounds like the Suse kernel doesn't support this NIC.)

Thanks in advanced for any input!

  • While i225V is not supported natively, you could install a hypervisor like proxmox onto the hardware and virtualize the firewall. It is exactly what I have done in my home setup too.

Make sure to dedicate one of the 4 nic's for management of the hypervisor with a static IP-address so you can always reach the hypervisor regardless if your firewall is up or not.

There's a lot of mini PC's that would fit your need. If you give the system 16GB of memory you can even create a HA-setup of Sophos where an update of the firewall would give a really short downtime.
