How to archive logfiles?

I desperately need to find a way to store logfiles from /log (/var/tslog) somewhere permanently. Although I'm already using SYSLOG as an external logging destination, I am missing lots of logging data that cannot be extracted from the GUI and isn't logged at the SYSLOG server either. This makes it quite impossible to investigate any issue that occurred more than ~2 days ago.

I already tried to download it using scp from a remote host but "permissions denied". The Get the logs article tells me to tar the logs to /tmp and then download them but there is no way to automate this.
