Azure virtual appliance backup

Hi

We are deploying a number of Sophos XG virtual appliances for customers in Azure.

Is there some form of documented backup guide for the virtual appliances?

We can backup the config from within the firewall, but I was also hoping to backup the actual VM to allow for quick recovery in the event of a major issue.

However because the backup agent is not installed inside the Linux OS in the image this doesnt work.

Has anyone else looked at Azure backup options?

Thanks

Dan

Hi Dan, Thanks for reaching out to Sophos Community.

Unfortunately, it is not available yet. You can't backup the entire VM and use it for recovery.

However, You can deploy XG in HA on Azure to overcome any of the failures

  • PS: I run multiple Sophos Firewalls in Azure since 3-4 Years and none of them was even down once (excluding firmware updates, of course).

So from a perspective of the underalying infrastructure, this seems to be "safe".

But you still should think about "Desaster recovery" agendas. What do to etc.

Backups of the firewall saved in Central. Screenshots and config saves of your Network in Azure etc. Templates saved to quickly recover a firewall.
