Noise level - XGS 107

Hello,

I’ve got a client with a very quiet office where we have installed an XGS 107.  Even though it is in the closet, they can hear a whining noise from it that winds up every couple of seconds or so, and then down again.  I can hear it as well.  It is a very low volume, but penetrates somehow, if that makes sense.  In a server room or behind a heavy door it probably would not be noticeable.

This is my first XGS unit so I don’t know if this is normal.  I do know that I never heard this sound from any of the XG units I have deployed.   

my questions are;

had anybody else noticed this noise?

What is the likely source?  I can’t tell if it is a fan or HDD.  I would suspect that any drive is solid state, which would leave just fan.

Is this normal?  Might there be any settings I could tweak to reduce noise?  Possibly need an enclosure of some sort to dampen the noise?

  • According to an email we got from Sophos the smaller fanless XG models are still recommended for this scenario.
     

  • I just received a XGS 116 for testing today. I wanted to replace my current XG 106.

    When I started the appliance the first time I was startled by the noise the device makes compared to the really quiet XG 106.

    Every time the appliance is starting to do something the sound gets even higher and louder. This is not desktop level noise.

    I will proceed with testing during the next couple of days to learn more about whether the speed really increased compared to my “old” XG.

    Really have to think twice regarding the noise. Working or living next to this new device seems to be annoying.

    We have received individual reports of XGS 87 and 107 units on which the fan speed exceeds our approved benchmarks and so creates additional noise.

    After further investigation, we have identified that this is an isolated issue which does not affect all customers with these models. Should you be experiencing louder than expected fan noise on your XGS 87(w) or XGS 107(w), please contact Sophos support.

    As previously mentioned, some increase in noise is to be expected due to the addition of a fan on the entry-level desktop models allowing Sophos to achieve best in class price per protected Mbps for its customers via increased networking and security processing capabilities. Significant acoustic lab testing was conducted, on XGS desktop platforms at idle and low load conditions, and the noise levels were comparable to a laptop or PC. However, this issue has caused some irritation for some of you, and for that we apologize.

    We have had excellent feedback on the new XGS Series so far and we take each and every issue raised here on the community very seriously.

  • Good to hear about your work in this area. The whole fan design issue is tricky -- especially on entry-level equipment. Some amazing things can be done, such as on Apple MacBook Pro's where asymmetric fan designs were used to shape the noise, but that doesn't come cheaply.

  • Same thing is happening on my XGS 116. Just set it up today. Fan is very loud and revs up every 10 seconds or so.

  • I would add that even with my original unit, the overall dB wasn't all that loud. It was a particular frequency that stood out and this frequency changed with fan speed. The original BIOS was more adaptive with the fan speed which drew your attention to it as it sped up and slowed down -- changing the frequency. The updated BIOS kept a steadier pace, but the piercing frequency was still irritating in the same room. The replacement unit has just a white fan noise -- no particular frequency stands out -- and it's not a problem to tune it out.

    So I'm happy with the end result. I would guess that the frequency issue is either an occasional manufacturing issue with the fan or an occasional assembly issue. Hopefully you'll be able to understand it better with the return.

  • We have the different firmware running on the XGS107 for a couple of weeks now. It is very quiet now and we had no negative effects at all. 
    Although I could have installed the firmware on my own, Sophos support did it via remote access to my Laptop. So be prepared to have an alternative internet connection when the firmware is installed. 

  • Hi,
    I also have problems selling the XGS series to my clients, especially with smaller offices. The noise emissions are too high. As an example, an XGS 116 (without load) is a lot louder than a PC. This is not possible without a soundproof server cabinet. I have to exchange the small XGS for XG hardware...
    I have to say I'm at a bit of a loss.

  • My replacement XGS87 is acceptably quiet. It's about 6 feet from my head -- though behind me and near the floor -- and I can definitely hear some fan noise, but the air conditioning is louder when it kicks in, street noise coming in through the window glass is noisier when a car or truck goes by. It's definitely not silent, but it's white noise and not annoying to me. (My original unit had a whine at a particular high pitch that carried into the next room, but the replacement doesn't have it.)

    The various laptops in the room are usually silent, so that might make the XGS seem louder. But a laptop under load is definitely louder than the XGS87.
