Sophos XG 17.5.15, various menu items no longer available (spinner / circle running).

A restart of Apache / Tomcat didn't help either.

backup also failed
"Scheduled backup to "Local" has failed."

Now i cannot restart tomcat, the service cannot be stopped and i see a number of "zombies" in "top".

Was already on the way to the site to restart the appliance, i could do this via the console.
After the restart everything is OK again, the question is how long.

Thank you for the update. 

No core dump or any partition is getting filled up. 

Did you try to restart the firewall? What is the uptime on your firewall? 

You could also run the hard disk test following this KBA: Sophos XG Firewall: Disk Test.

That will not be so easy with 250 home office users. Can someone from support look at the appliance?
