AP55 and APX120 performance differences

Hi folks,

I have recently upgraded my AP55/c to APX120.

I have noticed a performance decrease with the APX120.

Devices were able to connect to the 5ghz SSIDs at up to 866mb/s on the AP55s where as the maximum on the APX120 is 412mb/s.

I have checked the configuration of the APX and cannot see any different settings than on the AP55s.

Devices used a re W10 on an intel NUC, iPad, iPhones, mac mini (early 2020). All devices are running the latest version of OS.

Looking for others experiences with APX120s.

Ian

My XG is running V18.0.4 MR-4 with AP firmware 11.0.014-1.

  • My point is, APX120 is a wave 2 Accesspoint. If somehow the negotiation seems to fail and the client select only to send 40 MHz, this will limit you to this number. Are there tools to check the current channel selected plus the used bandwidth on your devices?

  • I dont think that its the issue...APX740 are also wave2 and all my not wave2 devices are connecting at 866Mbit, and those APX are managed by "older" UTM with manually set 80Mhz via console, as it cant be set in WebAdmin

  • Hi folks,

this morning I changed the mac-mini (2020 intel) to using wifi.

    The results are

    1/. channel 149

    2/. TX rate 433

    3/. 802.11ac

    4/. connection bandwidth 80mhz on 5ghz SSID.

  • I disabled the APX120 and so the mac mini is connected through the AP55 and immediately showed 760mb/s connections speed.

What else do I need to do to prove there is a bug in the APX120 firmware?

  • Register a Sophos Wireless Trial in Central, plug in this APX to Central and check, if there is a difference in this firmware.

  • Hi folks,

I think have identified part of the cause of the issue, the APX software does not appear to select the 80mhz channels even though 80mhz is specified in the configuration. I will manually change the channel to one of the 80mhz channels and see what happen.

  • Hi folks,

a little fuel on the fire.

Today I purchased a Ubiquiti Unifi l6 and installed it on my network.

    Results of 6 APs

    1/. AP55 coonects at 866mhz

    2/. AP55 connects at 866mhz

    3/. AP55c connects at 866mhz

    4/. Unifi L6 connects at 866mhz

    5/. APX120 connects at 433mhz

    6/. APX120 conencts at 433mhz.

So to me that this series of tests indicate there is a problem with the APX firmware.

Now just need a dev to agree and fix the issue.

An extra benefit is I get at least 150mbs on my 2.4ghz SSids again. I can’t remember when that speed connection went missing from my network.
