Not all devices are getting their IP from the DHCP Static List

Most devices on the network have taken their IP address from the Static List in DHCP.
Some devices though, are getting assigned 169.254.x.x addresses.

How can I get these devices to pick up the right IP?  Some of them are headless devices that I can't obtain their current IP

I have a Netgear Managed Switch that has three VLANs setup: 11, 22, 33.  When I connect to a port on for VLAN11, some devices pick up the right IP from XG, some get the 169.254.

I must be missing something obvious. Any ideas?

  • Hi Joe,

the 169 address is a self assigned address because the device does not get a response from the DHCP server.

Next you have the same IP address range assigned to two different interfaces.

Your devices should be talking to untagged VLAN 11 ports on your switch after you change the port 1 physical port IP address.

  • So by chance I did this:

turned on DHCP for port 1 for a range of 4 IPs that wll never get used and now it's working.  Question is .... why?

  • Hi,

because your devices will be pull IP addresses from port 1 not port 1.11. You need to change the IP address of port 1 because you will have routing issues.
