SW-18.0.0_GA-Build321-321 not booting on PONDESK Appliance

Hi all

I am running a Sophos UTM 9.7 on a J1900 4 GBit NIC appliance and it just rocks.

To migrate from UTM to XG I ordered a new appliance https://www.pondesk.com/product/MNHO-048

Intel ATOM QuadCore E3845 CPU with 8GB RAM, 120GB SSD NVME Modul and 4 Intel I211-AT NICs

I installed the SW-18.0.0_GA-Build321-321.iso which went fine (at least the installer). After rebooting when the setup was through the BIOS presented me an error message saying that it failed to boot.

Insert boot median and press any key to continue.

I checked all the BIOS settings and boot order. Everything was correct. I even tried the F11-Boot Menu and selected the SSD directly. No chance. I played with the BIOS Settings (Secure mode disable, CSM Legacy, ... ). No way. Installation always worked but BOOT failed. After some time I tried the

SW-17.5.9_MR-9-577.iso

And what a wonder. It booted just fine and I could do the first setup wizard and the box was up. From there I was able to upgrade to v18 using

SW-18.0.0_GA-Build321.SFW-321.sig

The box still booted fine. Even after upgrading firmware to SFOS 18.0.0 GA-Build339

So my question is: Does SW-18.0.0_GA-Build321-321.iso have a broken Boot-Loader or Boot-Loader installation ?

I mean the appliance I bought is really a mainstream board and has an AMI BIOS. Just everything should work on that.

Any idea ?

  • Hello,

Did you try to update the BIOS with the latest update?

I read on some other threads that updating the bios of HW appliances resolved the booting problems.

  • Hi Viken

Yup the BIOS update. I read that too. But up to know the PONDESK homepage seems not to offer newer BIOS Versions.
I think I will have to write and question them.

So far the system performs good with upgrade path I took from v17 to v18.

Somewhere when going from v17 to v18 it said it could not migrate the config and therefore uses the default configuration.

I found that OK as it means I had a real v18 clean config instead of an upgrade one from v17.
