DHCP Static Mappings

Hello,

been running XG for couple of days (yes, days "only", don't shoot me), and I can't shake the feeling that I'm being somewhat annoyed.

Can someone explain me how I would go about using XG in a non-domain?

On UTM, I used to have a single entry for a device, which had a name, ip, which DHCP server, MAC, hostname, additional hostname if I wanted... I would simply enter all my home devices in there, and the IPs would just go out to the devices.

On XG, I figured there is a list in DHCP... a bit basic, if you ask me.

Any other way?

It seems to me that XG has been built for domain-environments mainly.

  • Hi,

DHCP has basic static mapping, no exceptions, no in scope assignments, no relationship to the DNS.

You will need to create host entries for your devices.

I would also suggest you use clientless users and they still need an email address.

That way you will see your devices in some of the reports and you get control of access. To disable a user you use clientless, not the connection disconnect because a restart is required to enable any user disconnected.

  • So I have to do it double? I need to create DHCP entries with IP addresses and I have to create IP Host entries?

Why would I want to create clientless users? Especially match them to an IP address? Different users work on different computers... and I have to give it email address, if I would maybe use a computer in there. I so don't see a point using this.

  • Clientless users provide the ability to block a device temporarily and you do not need a real email address, I use dummies that fit standard format.

If you want devices to appear in reports you need both.
