DHCP not working after setup

I've installed sophos xg on several machines. Two intel based machine only one of which would work after many re installs and facotry resets. And on an APU2 board. The one that worked took a while but DHCP always seemed to work it may have been a rule or policy thing. On the other Intel machine and the APU2 board DHCP will just not work. Out of the box you should be able to connect to LAN and get to https://172.16.16.16:4444 but it never works. Even setting my machine static and the NIC saying theres a connection and being able to ping the sophos machine I still can't get to the initial setup page. I don't know all the details of my hardware but the computer I did get it to work on is a dell optiplex thats about 7 years old vs the other two machine that fail only being about 2 years old. Bryond frustrating. I'm just looking for advice because others are able to get this working on similar if not the same hardware. thanks

  • I have 3 Nics only two being detected. is an asrock intel board. I haven't confirm which nic is the lan but I'm able to set things static and ping the 172.16.16.16 address but just can't get to it. The APU2 board has three nics too and haven't confirmed which one is actually the lan but I can set static the 172.16.16.16 address but can't ping on that one. anyways I feel it should all just work like it did on the 6 year old optiplex. maybe unsupported NICs? I'd dont know. Only reason I'm doing this is for research for a new job who uses sophos gear and I start next week. I could just run in a VM on my server and be done with it but I'd like the machines I have to work without get senior engineers involved. I'll do more testing and report back but this is getting lower on my list of priorities so we'll what this weekend is like. Thanks for all the replys.

  • Most likely the NICs are mixed up.

My approach would be to test this on the CLI level.

Should be quite easy and best practice to approach the CLI.

Tools, which are easy to remember in Linux:

ethtool, ifconfig, tcpdump, conntrack, (XG only: drppkt), ip (r g), tail(f), less, grep

Be familiar which all of the tools here listed, i assuming you will outrun most of the people, running XG.

You should know: Stateful Firewall, TCP Handshake, Modules on XG,

Modules can be find here: https://community.sophos.com/kb/en-us/132211

Come in with a strong CLI tool, everybody will be impressed. I am loving mobaXterm. Never approached such a strong toolkit. (No ad, just my advice).

The rest will come with time using those tools. But my list above helps you with all network tools in the world.

  • Thanks I'm going to look into all this. It's strange though that now I've install xg on about 5 machines and only one worked out of the box (sorta, after a couple fresh installs). Once it works it works great but I'm struggling. Thanks for the info. I'm sure it's around this forum but could you direct me to a troubleshooting guide with CLI commands with tutorials? I'd like to keep this issue going and possibly make a knowledge base out of it because this has to be a common issue with people but I don't see much mention of this particular problem. Most people get right in it seems. anyways thanks again!

  • Hi,

intel i219 chip NICs are not supported, so that could be why you are not seeing all the NICs.

Using the console can you access the network settings item on the menu?

  • I think that was it. The nic I was using to connect to the login page was an intel i219. Had a usb nic laying around and use that now it all works. Crazy! Thanks man!!
