  • Because you cannot use the Hardware Image, there is no "Real" benefit in using XG Hardware.

Sophos XG Home uses the software Image. So you have to install the software Image anyways.

In such case, you could also use a selfmade PC, which could give more performance.   could add some stuff.

  • Thanks for the answer!
Can you currently recommend a PC to me?

  • You are limited to 4Cores and 6 GB RAM. The License is tied to those requirements.

So actually you could pump as much performance in this 4 core as you want.

Nearly all modules on XG benefits of great CPU Performance.

Looking on amazon, there you will find some appliances. Search for "Security appliance".

But thats not my domain of expertise.

  • It's not worth to pay for a XG appliance for home usage. (It's only worth if you have a need for Sandstorm, but still you would have to pay yearly license for something you can get for free.)

The best thing you can do is self-build a PC yourself.

The current limit of the XG Home license is 4 Cores and 6GB of RAM, since you have a gigabit connection, then you need to get at least a high-clock CPU (IPS still isn't fully multi-threaded, If you download a file, which uses a single connection, you will be limit do a single core right now.)

Cheapest CPU you can get right now for gigabit speeds is:

    - Intel G5400 ($65.) (Dual Core CPU with hyper-threading and High Clock.)

    - Your best bet to - never have a performance issue with XG is the Intel I3-9100 ($130.) (Quad Core CPU with High Clock.)

You can also use AMD CPUs for this, but I don't recommend it, since Hyperscan (One of the high-performance library's of Snort that XG uses) only have performance improvements for Intel CPUs.

I'm currently using the Intel G5400, With IPS/AV/TLS Decryption I can get 910Mbit/s over a HTTPS Download (Single Connection.). Around 2Gbit/s in total throughput with this CPU. (Multiple Connections.).

Also, the throughput will vary a lot depending on the kind of traffic that's passing through XG.

Also, don't get those 4 Cores Intel Atoms, their cheap, but not worth from a computing perspective.

    Thanks!

    Thanks

  • Just to be sure, did you purchase enough hard disk storage?

As far as i know, XG needs 80 GB storage to run. The other can correct me, if i am wrong.

  • Hi LuCar,

you are correct with disk size. The smaller XGs all run with way smaller disks, me I refer to put a 120gb minimum in just to be on the safe side.

While the box pointed to in the URL is good, if you plan to experiment with the configuration you will find the GUI updates a bit slow otherwise fine.

  • I'm gonna take a 250gb SSD install.

  • One warning, the installation will take a long time because the disk is completely formatted.

  • Hello,

I have installed XG Firewall on the hardware Protectli and it is said that everything is ok. But when I boot up I always get the message that there is no operating system on it. Built in is a msata 128GB. Has anyone already gained experience?

    Best regards
