AFAIK and I remember, go for an Intel and the chance that the NIC works is high. Maybe rfcat_vk can help or remember thread on this question.

I was also thinking about Intel NICs as I need one for my vSphere server as well and I know that Intel NICs are supported.

Be very careful and only go for the newer chips, avoid the i219 series.

looking at the drivers loaded on v18, the following intel modules are loaded already:

ixgbevf               
ixgbe_nm

Looking at Intel website, you should go for the NICs with this chipset:

- The ixgbevf driver can only be activated on kernels that support SR-IOV. It supports all of the above devices except for the Intel® Ethernet Controller 82598.

Module igb are also loaded for the SR-IOV.
igbvf
igb_nm

I presume that the Intel Cards in the Intel list will work.

thanks but may I ask where you have found the information which drivers are loaded at Sophos XG (as mine is still running on the latest 17.5.9 MR-9 version.

Ok.On advanced shell, run the following commands:

lsmod | grep igb

lsmod | grep ixg

you should see somethig like:

ixgbevf                57344  0
ixgbe_nm              335872  0

and

igbvf                  45056  0
igb_nm                208896  0

If these 2 are returned, drivers are there and loaded.

There is a KBA for our own Hardware.

Most likely the key message there is: 

• Sophos recommends using Intel code transceiver to support all combination.

But they are talking about our own Hardware and the drivers there. 

So assuming you are using a bare metal installation, Intel as a chip driver would be the best catch. 

The highest chance would be installing XG on the ESXi, because we support vmware fully in V18 and the driver will be delivered by Vmware.
