Sophos XG to Azure VPN drops randomly

I have a Sophos XG appliance running a site to site VPN to Microsoft Azure Virtual Network Gateway. The VPN randpmly drops and reconnect at random times for random periods

I have followed this guide, including disabling re-key and setting the DPD peer disconnection to disconnect:

Any ideas what could be causing this?

  • This was resolved by ensuring there is traffic constantly traversing the VPN. When there is no "interesting" traffic at all traversing the VPN the Azure side will send a delete request to the XG after about 15mins. Also noticed if the tunnel is down and you initiate traffic from Azure the tunnel comes up straight away.

  • Still a bad behavior from Azure... But you actually can force XG to send keep alive through the Tunnel. Simply create a new gateway and send ICMP heartbeats. Will this keep up the tunnel?
