Sophos XG Home use - mini PC recommendation

All,

Looking for recommendation on a low cost mini PC, fanless is possible, to run Sophos XG with 400mbps throughput.

I have contacted Zotac but their mini C series have 1 Intel and 1 Realtek NICs.

Thanks for your help.

  • Thanks for your response.

Can you sue a Celeron J1900 CPU

Do you really need a CPU with Intel AES-NI.

  • J1900 will work but there is no reason not to have AES-NI

Get a i3 or i5 and it will be more than enough for a router for a long time.

  • I will recommend pondesk they even will replace stuff that is long past warranty and I have also seen some new server that is quite good.

I am also able to call them up and speak with people that provide good customer service when i need help.

I am still a novice but i know quality when i see it another one is qotom but i never like customer service

  • Hi - I've bought a similar device from ebay:

    https://www.pondesk.com/product/Intel-Atom-E3845-4-LAN-3G4G-HD-Fanless-Firewall-Router_MNHO-048

I’m using this image: SW-17.5.10_MR-10-620.iso  made into a bootable USB stick for the install.

The installation goes fine, I can get onto the box and do the initial setup wizard (but I don’t licence it – I never do that until I’m happy it’s good).

The problem, is once I reboot the machine it then performs  “automated file system integrity check” and then drops into failsafe mode. If I then go to the system console and do “show failure reason” it gives “unable to start config database”

I’ve re-imaged it several times and always does the same thing after the reboot.

In the BIOS settings it asks for OS type, i've tried linux and windows.

    Anyone got any pointers?

I got this Atom  mini PC from Pondesk in UK, a few days ago

    4 intel nics (i211)

VGA port ( good to have for installation and troubleshooting if no web access)

wifi (+/- 3g or 4 g module) in case of change of use

in less than 24 hours in my home from delivery (London to Athens -Greece)

I tested it's consumption, it is around 6.5 - 7 Watts in my setup (home)

I have no idea about performance at 400mbps

I too have purchased one of these units and few good.  Currently fitted with 4GB RAM and 128GB SSD.  I've put Untangle on it for now following a dire experience with Unifi's offerings.

Sophos XG Home is of particular interest though.

  • I've now got it installed (but yet to configure it) - I used a new image SW-17.5.11_MR-11-661.iso  and didn't get the same problem.

The ebay seller  "ukdigitalelectronics" I used was very helpful, to the extent that he installed a copy onto box at his end to prove it wasn't a hardware problem - so recommended seller on that front.
