Restrict iOS update to certain version on all devices

Hi,

Is there a way to update all iOS devices to the same version. (iOS 14.8) even though iOS 15 is available?

I know we can do this on each individual device. but is there a way to do this for a group? -> Update to 14.8 ( not the latest update)

Thanks.

  • Hello SimonCTO,

Thank you for reaching out to the Sophos Community.

The only option available at this time is "iOS & iPadOS software update delay" which will result in the latest iOS update being delayed up to a maximum of 90 days. As iOS 15 was just released on the 20th, I recommend changing this setting to 90 days as a precautionary measure.

If you wish to see changes made in future versions of SMC for iOS so that it is possible for you to define which version of iOS you want your devices to update to, I recommend submitting a feature request through the following portal.

  • I just want to double-check now that iOS 15.0.1 is out, does this mean that the delay will only delay iOS15.0.1 and no longer delay iOS 15.0?

Is there have been a lot of updates in a short period of time.

    14.8 - September 13, 2021

    15 - September 20, 2021

    15.0.1 - October 6, 2021

I just want to know what to expect all of these updates are less that 90 days ago.

  • Hello Simon,

Thank you for pointing this out, as my response is a little misleading on that part.

The verbiage in our documentation indicates that any iOS update will need to wait the specified number of days before being allowed to install on your devices. The delay is calculated based on the release date, meaning that each respective release will need to wait 90 days before it’s allowed to install.

iOS & iPadOS software update delay

The number of days that an update of iOS or iPadOS is delayed after its release date.

Enter a value from 0 (no delay) to 90.

The following will be true for when each respective version is allowed to install.

    14.8 - Released: September 13, 2021
    Available: December 12, 2021

    15 - Released: September 20, 2021
    Available: December 19, 2021

    15.0.1 - Released: October 6, 2021
    Available: January 4, 2021

If anything is unclear, or if you have further questions, feel free to update this thread.
