115w - WiFi failing every day after firmware update

Hello,

I am running a 115w on 9.411-3 with the internal WiFi at 2.4GHz and bridged to AP LAN for over a year now with no problem at all, but since about one week I have noticed that the wifi keeps failing almost every day on almost the same time (19:00-21:00 in the evening). Changing the configuration to force the AP to get reconfigured hasn't helped. The only solution I found is to reboot the whole device.

The only thing I did in the past was the firmware updates, so I blame Sophos for it. Has anyone noticed problems with one of the latest firmwares and the internal WiFi?

If necessary I can provide my logs.

 

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    After these, the WiFi won't work until a reboot.

    Dino, sometimes the Up2Date process mangles part of a configuration.  Try restoring the configuration backup made just before the last time you applied Up2Dates.  Any luck with that?

    The upgrade (Up2Date) to UTM 9.500-9 earlier this week (May 8, 2017) has completely broken WiFi on my SG-115w:

     

    In the Wireless Protection Logs, getting

    2017:05:09-23:57:32 sophos hostapd: Configuration file: /var/run/hostapd-phy0.conf
2017:05:09-23:57:32 sophos hostapd: nl80211: 'nl80211' generic netlink not found
2017:05:09-23:57:32 sophos hostapd: Failed to initialize driver 'nl80211'
2017:05:09-23:57:32 sophos hostapd: hostapd_free_hapd_data: Interface wifi2 wasn't started
2017:05:09-23:57:32 sophos hostapd: hostapd_free_hapd_data: Interface wifi1 wasn't started
2017:05:09-23:57:32 sophos hostapd: hostapd_free_hapd_data: Interface wifi0 wasn't started

    In a shell, getting

    sophos:/root # iw list
    nl80211 not found.

    Anyone else experiencing similar issues? I'm still investigating, will post findings here.

    Can you log a support ticket with Sophos? they need people to tell them issues so that it can make 9.5 better for everyone. Even if you don't have a valid support case I am sure they would be interested to help and see whats going on.

     

    Also, have you tried reinstalling the 9.4 iso and does it come back?

    That was my first thought, but as a Home User I don't have that option. On the support page, under Home Users it says

    Important: We currently do not provide phone or email support for our free products and tools.

    You can find online documentation and videos as well as support through Sophos Community

    Hence my post to this thread (which was pretty close so I didn't want to open a new one). You're right though, I should probably put a link to this issue on the 9.5 thread

    Probably my second next step. First is trying to figure out the driver / module - it'd be ideal to move forward.

    Well they have now released the proper iso for 9.5. Perhaps try that?

    I'm installing 9.5 from iso as we speak, I'm curious if it changes anything. I've got a 9.4 iso on stand-by, that's the next step. I'll update the thread with the results.

    I can confirm now that 9.500-9 breaks WiFi on SG-115w with the error I've posted above (even after reimage from ISO)

    I had to reimage the 115w to 9.413-4 to get WiFi back.

     

    I'd be happy to report this to Sophos Support but I am a Home User and I haven't found  way to contact their support with this type of license.

    I know your previous comment was addressed to OP but just to provide some info from my side:

    Before reimaging I've tried restoring the backup just before Up2Date and it didn't fix the issue.

    Had same issues and found in a German forum to add athk9 (my case) or athk10 to /etc/modules file and reboot unit....

    working fine now on 9.5...
