Site to Site VPN : RED

Hello,

I still don't get it, what are the purpose to use a RED site to site VPN ?

From what I read:

- its slower than IPsec.

- its as easy as SSL VPN to setup.

- its not possible to extend a same subnet with this mode because you have to route. (Am I correct?)

So what are the use cases for this VPN?

  • Salut !

Before it was possible to bind an IPsec Connection to an interface, a RED tunnel was the only way to use Static Routing and Multipathing with a VPN connection.

A Remote Ethernet Device connection comes in handy for bridging Ethernet segments in two different locations.  I described an example of a RED tunnel between two UTMs several years ago.

    Cheers - Bob
