POP3 problem, error 0x800CCC0F in outlook

Hello,

we have a SMTP mail server on a DMZ and people checking their e-mails on this server with POP3 client (outlook & outlook express). Since a few days, some mails were bloqued and people were receiving the following message in outlook :

Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection. Possible causes for this include server problems, network problems, or a long period of inactivity. Account: 'account name', Server:'server', Protocol: POP3, Port 110, Secure (SLL); No, Error Number: 0x800CCC0F

My Mail server reported the following errors :

POP 20 Aug 3 07:15:14 F 1021 1997 Too many connections (2) from [192.168.2.1] to [192.168.2.2]
POP 20 Aug 3 07:15:14 A 0000 -1 -ERR Busy - please try later

192.168.2.1 being Astaro and 192.168.2.2 the mail server.

After disabling POP3 proxy, everything is fine. Can anyone tell me what is the problem ?

Your mail server seems to allow only one connection per IP (????) and since all your clients are now coming from the same IP (the proxy) the server denies them access. I think the obvious solution would be to disable this option on the server.

Thanks for your answer. The strange thing is that I haven't changed anything on this server, except for some security patchs I installed, regarding Microsoft vulnerability (NT4). There must be another axplanation.

Which pop3 server are you using?
Is it GMS mail or NTMail by any chance?

Bingo ! how did you guess ? i actually use NTmail v4, which is the old name for Gordano GMS mail. Is there any issue regarding GMS ?

Just kidding, just searched the internet for issues regarding the error message you posted .
I think this will be very useful. The same issue preventing outlook from making multiple connections at once is preventing the proxy from doing it. Set the number of connections to 20 and you're set.

Coming back from holidays, I tried to set the number of current connections to 20 on the NTMail but the problem was still there... I will not try to make other tests, as this is too annoying to clients. Thanks anyway for your help.

Which version of ASL are you running? Did you up2date recently?
