SSL-VPNA & Vista

Hallo,

we're using SSL-VPN client on differnet Client Systems. Now there are some Vista machines using Astaros SSL-VPN-Client. Up on this time we have differnet probelms with the VPN.

There are few machines (Vista Business) we installed the Client on. After installing (as Admin User) the VPN can be established and the client has access to the internal network by using the VPN line. After the first reboot, the VPN can still be established but no packages will pass through. Switching off the Windows Firewall did not solve the problem. In the windows Defender the Astaro Client is set to "allow".

To get the line up and running, we have to exit the Astaro-VPN-Client by using "EXIT" on the lights in system tray. After that we have to restart the Client using "Execute as Admin". Now it's running as it should.

My question is: is there a howto or a possibility to get the client running withou bothering the user to start it as Admin?

    Check out the Astaro Knowledgbase, there is an article in there on how to tweak Vista so that you don't have those very problems you mention.  It works, just fixed up a client with the same issues a week or so ago.

    I now have vista business version working with the Astaro SSL VPN client I have updated the Win-TUN32 install to a newer version OPENVPN version 2.01

    Thanks for all the help.
    cbcit and shanez already pointed out the most important facts.

    Following their links, I managed to set up SSL-VPN on Vista Business 64. For all of you who still have problems, here is a quick HowTo (ca. 5-10min needed). That's how I did, still I am not sure if it will work all the time...

    Premise: Astaro SSL-VPN Client is just OpenVPN-Client plus Astaro-Logo. As there currently is no Astaro-VPN Client supporting 64bit Windows OSes, we use the fairly newer "original" OpenVPN-Client with 64bit support (Currently in release-candidate state).
    As soon as there is a Astaro Version supporting 64bit, this is no longer necessary, of course.

    STEP 1:
    Activate the administrator account on Vista. To do this, open an explorer-window, right-click on "computer" and choose "manage". Go to "Local users and groups" -> users. Double-click on "administrator" uncheck "account is disabled" checkbox. If you want to, you can set a password for the administrator here as well. Log off.
    Now you can login as administrator.

    STEP 2:
    Install OpenVPN. You need a version, that explicitly supports Vista 64 for example OpenVPN 2.1_rc4 which you can get here:

    Install OpenVPN.

    STEP 3:
    Configure OpenVPN. You need Configuration and Certificates of your Astaro Firewall in OpenVPN. As the Astaro-Client and the OpenVPN client are basically the same, just download  a preconfigured version of the Astaro SSl-VPN client from your enduser portal. Unzip it and copy the whole "config" directory to your OpenVPN installation (e.g. "\program files (x86)\OpenVPN\config"). Now you have a configured OpenVPN installation. Check it out by running "OpenVPN GUI", right-click the tray icon and choose "connect".

    STEP 4:
    Set program-rights correctly.

    It is Error 3 that you'll have to solve.
    Just replace the mentioned astaro installation directory with you OpenVPN installation directory.
    I found out, the it is extremely important to do this as Administrator and NOT just some user with administrator-like rights.

    This is what I did
    Right click on Astaro in start menu and select properties
    Click advanced and select run as administrator
    This works fine with me
