Safeguard Enterprise 8.1 AD necessary?

So on the new 8.1 help guide it shows AD as not necessary? Can I link my Sophos Server upto another LDAP Source instead of AD?

Unfortunately, No, the Microsoft Active Directory (AD) is the only directory service from which SGN can read and import objects via the LDAP protocol.
